Sorry little Johnny and Janey, but you'll have to remain in foster care or an orphanage, because as long as the law says we have to allow gay couples to adopt, we're not going to perform any adoptions at all. So says Boston Catholic Charities, proving that South Dakota doesn't have a monopoly on knuckle-draggers.
Proving once again that religious conservatism is basically open war on women, homosexuals, and now children too, Boston Catholic Charities has made its backward, draconian decision clear. From CBS News article Boston Catholic Charities Halts Adoptions:
The Boston Archdiocese's Catholic Charities said Friday it would stop providing adoption services because of a state law allowing gays and lesbians to adopt children.
The social services arm of the Roman Catholic archdiocese, which has provided adoption services for the state for about two decades, said the law runs counter to church teachings on homosexuality.
..."The world changed often and we adapted the ministry to meet changing times and needs. At all times we sought to place the welfare of children at the heart of our work... but now, we have encountered a dilemma we cannot resolve," [Rev. J. Bryan Hehir, president of Catholic Charities, and Jeffrey Kaneb, trustees chairman] said.
According to the article the organization has placed 720 children in adoptive homes, of which 13 were adopted by same sex couples. Thirteen. That's what all this hubbabaloo is about... the less than 2% of all adopted children that go to gay families. An environment BTW that several respected scientific organizations (which, unlike "The Family Research Council", do not have political agendas) have demonstrated is every bit as healthy and conducive to producing a well adjusted adult as a traditional family. It has also been demonstrated that adoptive gay parents do not raise gay children at any higher percentage rate than heterosexual parents do.
As a humanist and a liberal, I give a lot of money to charities. Boston Catholic Charities can rest assured that they will never see a dime of my money, and I urge anyone actually living in this century to consider shutting them off too.
