The actor Michael J. Fox recently appeared in a campaign ad. As everyone knows Mr. Fox has Parkinson's disease, a debilitating illness for which there is no cure. Needless to say, Mr. Fox therefore supports stem cell research, and therefore supports Missouri Democratic Senate candidate Claire McCaskill. So it is quite reasonable for him to appear in an ad for her. As Parkinson's progresses it causes tremors in the sufferer, and Mr. Fox is clearly suffering in the ad.
Seeing Mr. Fox as he now is made me want to cry. When I was a kid I remember being a fan of a lot of Michael J. Fox's movies. Sure he's no Anthony Hopkins, but I still liked his movies and by extension liked him. I have an Aunt with Parkinson's and seeing Mr. Fox reminded me of how she is suffering, and how thousands of people with Parkinson's are also suffering. It's just an awful thing.
Seeing Mr. Fox as he now is made Rush Limbaugh angry. Causing him to accuse Fox, during his radio program, of either deliberately going off his medication or playing up his symptoms on the air so as to win votes for McCaskill.
Now I ask you, what sort of gutter slime accuses someone with a debilitating illness of "faking it" for political points? Was Rush "faking" his addiction to Oxycontin? Assuming he went through some sort of withdrawal symptoms getting off the drug, was he "faking" those symptoms? Rush Limbaugh is a sick piece of shit.
Having been informed by other people that, yes, Michael J. Fox really does tremble like that, all the time, 'cause you know, that's what Parkinson's does to people, Rush, Limbaugh had this to say yesterday:
From Limbaugh Says Fox Exploited Disease (AOL News):
..."All I'm saying is I've never seen him the way he appears in this commercial for Claire McCaskill," says Limbaugh. "So I will bigly, hugely admit that I was wrong, and I will apologize to Michael J. Fox, if I am wrong in characterizing his behavior on this commercial as an act, especially since people are telling me they have seen him this way on other interviews and in other television appearances."...
Wow Rush, that's really big of you. And let me be the first to say, go fuck yourself... hugely... you asshole. Next time you are going shopping be sure to add "giant fucking cork" to the list.
I'm sure it makes folks uncomfortable to see what happens to people who suffer from the sorts of diseases that stem cell research might lead to cures for. It sure makes me uncomfortable! But I'm sure it's far more disconcerting to someone weighing the value of a 14 day old embryo which is not a person and may never become one against a real life Parkinson's sufferer. It's probably much easier when the Parkinson's sufferer becomes an abstraction. It must be particularly hard to deal with it when it's in your face.
So I'm glad Michael J. Fox got in people's faces and forced them to associate a real face and name with their abstract disease-sufferer. Good on you Michael.
And as for Limbaugh, I have no idea whether he is for or against stem cell research. But he most certainly is an obnoxious ass.
