Rain on My Parade

I'm watching the 2006 Tournament of Roses Parade on ABC right now. I was really happy to see Justice Sandra Day O'Connor was the grand marshall. Unfortunately, for the first time since 1955, it is raining on the Tournament of Roses Parade...

Teri Hatcher and one of her costars from Desperate Housewives are doing the hosting, and I must say, they are doing a pretty shitty job. I'm watching marching bands go by and all I can hear are Ms. Hatcher and her colleague talking about themselves, their kids, and blathering on about their show.

Guess what guys, it isn't about you!

But the floats are beautiful--shame that everything is getting rained on. Leann Rimes sounded good (for a country singer), but the audio seemed spotty for Toni Braxton's performance.

Nice to see a parade again, even if only on TV, it's been a long time for me.

You just won the The Hit & Miss Award at MOTL (for the second year running).

That's funny -- I happened to be getting ready to run at 1pm, and one of my favorite 15 minutes of television happens on HGTV at 1, so I turned it on but instead they were showing the soggy parade. Which I didn't watch, but I thought how funny a thing a parade is. Why do we like them? Why do we put them on?

In Somerset we have a fun one called the Musictown parade (Somerset is Musictown). It's great because it's bands marching from all over the area (they participate in a competition before the parade), including bagpipe bands and all kinds of weird stuff, plus a lot of high school bands.

If I'm going to watch a parade, I like there to be a lot of music.

In Westport, where I grew up, we had the "horribles" parade, which was the Fourth of July parade. It was horrible because it was just businesses, driving their cars by and throwing candy. (Which is why I thought it was just great when I was a kid.) There was the occasional G.S. or B.S. troop and possibly a float, but more likely a flatbad with a tractor on it. :-P
