I agree James. I haven't been blown away by a video game since Deus Ex (my favorite of all time). Lately, I've been dicking with Splinter Cell, and I do enjoy it, but nothing will ever top DX.

During a shotgun review of xbox games I did back in July of 2004, I summed up my opinion on Deus Ex as follows:

Some games belong on PC's. I might have finished this game if I had not recently finished "Knights of the Old Republic". I found this game utterly uncompelling and boring. Played about 2 or3 hours. No interest in going back to it.

Maybe I should give it another try. For me, the crowning achievement of video games is still Halo, and to a lesser exent Halo II.

Speaking of video games, I most recently tried Far Cry on my PC. I've gone back to it a few times, but I have largely concluded (here comes my heretical opinion) that Far Cry is crap. So if you were thinking of trying it, I'd say don't bother.

Deus Ex uncompelling and boring? Wow, never heard it described like that before. Everyone is different though, and that's okay. I loved the game, because it was WAY more than just another FPS. You had the opportunity to avoid violence altogether if you like, strategy played a HUGE role in the game, the storyline was complex and took a LONG time to shake out. I remember remarking to my buddy who played it at the same time, "I can't believe they fit so much story and gameplay onto 1 CD".

I'd love it if the videogame industry could break out of its FPS rut. I know their target demographic is low, but aren't there enough of us old fogies who want to buy games that would like to see something different?
