clue. didn't get it until 5. I originally guessed Addams family then haunted mansion (neither of which I've seen).

I guessed it on image 4... I had never seen the movie but I played the game and new a movie had been created after it... So there was no progression for me... If I had seen image 4 at any time in the sequence I would've guessed clue... If image 4 wasn't there I wouldn't have guess the movie :)

Yeah, I figure if one thinks long enough about what one is looking at in image 4, one probably can guess it from that image alone.

Took me til image 5. I'm blaming the cough syrup again. :) Had I thought more about image 4, I might have gotten it there. I knew I had seen it as of image 2, but couldn't remember where.

I got it at 3. I thouth at first that it was The Haunting or something like that.

Thanks to everyone who guessed, of course it is the 1985 comedy "Clue" set in New England in 1954 and starring Tim Curry, Christopher Lloyd, Lesley Anne Warren, Michael McKean, Madeline Kahn, Martin Mull, Eileen Brennan, Lee Ving, and Colleen Camp.

Wadsworth: I'M NOT SHOUTING! [pause] ALRIGHT I AM! I'M SHOUTING! I'M SHOUTING!

So am I. I've always loved this film. But like so many films I've loved, you can't take it seriously. And in truth, at least this time, you are not supposed to. If you try to take Clue seriously, you will not enjoy it. Applying a little thought makes clear that the plot has holes big enough to sail a boat through, but forget all that...

Wadsworth: Mr. Boddy! Dead! Again? Why would anyone want to kill him twice?
Miss Scarlett: It seems so unnecessary.
Col. Mustard: It's what we call overkill.
Prof. Plum: It's what we call psychotic.

The dialog for the most part is great, very witty, clever wordplay, all around goodness. There are a few literal jokes and some overused ones that you can see coming a mile away, but much of it leaves me gasping for air between belly laughs. And why wouldn't it? The movie has such a killer cast, these people could be quoting stock tickers and I'd still laugh. As the action slowly builds to a frenetic pace, it soon becomes clear that these people can't even walk down a flight of steps without being funny.

Mr. Green: WHERE ARE WE GOING??!!

Movies based on games tend to be bad but there are notable exceptions (Tomb Raider, for example). Clue is a movie that's great even if you have never played the board game, but if you have you'll enjoy how the way the game was played has been adapted into the film.

Wadsworth: THAT'S WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO FIND OUT! WE'RE TRYING TO FIND OUT WHO KILLED HIM, AND WHERE, AND WITH WHAT!

With the Game of Clue, the murderer, his or her weapon of choice, and the scene of the crime are all cards hidden in an envelope. All the remaining suspects, possible weapons, and possible locations are distributed as cards to the players. You attempt to deduce who is the guilty party by getting other players to reveal their clues while guarding your own. In the end, it comes down to the cards which are missing... you'll find this theme recurring in the film as well.

Wadsworth: And then, we all rushed to the billiard room! But one of us, wasn't here.

Green: The gun is missing! Whoever's got the gun shot the girl!

Mustard: So who wasn't there the entire time in the kitchen?
Wadsworth: Whoever it was, is the murderer!

One of the surprises in this film was that so few of the characters wore the colors after which they are named, but in watching it a few times, it becomes clear that the creators wanted the character's personality to capture that. Mrs. Peacock, frumpy, but at the same time overly concerned with appearances. Miss Scarlet dressed all in green, but red hot in her sultry performance. Mrs. White a recent widow dressed all in black, but very cold and pale. Mustard and Plum indeed wore their colors leaving Mr. Green who wore blue. You'll have to watch the film to determine how he lived up to his color.

But here's what really happened...

One of the cool things about Clue that I didn't know until recently was that in the theatres, the film was released with three different endings. The ending you saw was random and depended on which theatre you went to. Undoubtedly a gimmick to get you to see the film more than once, I can't imagine the confusion it created when people who had seen the film in different theatres discussed it. I first saw it on video tape where all three endings were played at the end of the film with titles between them.

Finally, the film has plenty of slapstick and sight gags that never fail to make me laugh... White, Green, Yvette, and Wadsworth colliding on the landing, Wadsworth accidentally dousing himself in the shower, and of course Mr. Green catching the overweight, dead, cook at she tumbles out of the freezer:

Mr. Green: I DIDN'T DO IT!!! [pause] Could somebody help me please? [begins to crumple under the cook's weight] Could somebody HELP ME, PLEASE?

This was the first film I ever saw with Lesley Anne Warren (hottie) in it, and I've liked her ever since. Her spicy portrayal of the worldly brothel owner positively sizzles--she even outshines the busty Colleen Camp who plays the French maid with the stunning half-mile of cleavage.

I like pretty much all of the actors in this film, especially Tim Curry (a.k.a. Frank N. Furter) who is one of my favorite actors of all time. He delivers lines flawlessly, no matter how complex or how outrageous.

Wadsworth: And you also knew her, sir. We've already established that you were one of Miss Scarlet's clients. That's why you were so desperate to get your hands on those negatives. Photographs of you and Yvette in flagrante delicto, remember?

All in all a terrific comedy that I will watch again and again despite it's flaws. If you haven't seen it, you really should.

The three endings gimmick was not really secret when the film was released, alhough I don't remember knowing whether it was on a theatre-by-theatre basis. So people knew they could try for a different ending on repeat viewings, at the time.

I saw this one in the theatre. I think it was back when Swansea Mall actually had a tiny cinema.

Chuck, have you ever seen the movie Murder by Death? It was made long before Clue, and has a similar premise, though not quite as slapstick. It also has an excellent cast, Alec Guinness, Truman Capote, Peter Falk, and others...if you haven't seen it, watch it. I belive Neil Simon wrote it, it spoofs detective movies, so you have a send-up of Charlie Chan, Sam Spade, etc. It's a hoot.

Yes I have. That's a good movie too, and predates Clue significantly, but I've always preferred Clue.
