On CNN right now Blitzer, King, and other commentators are talking about avoiding making early calls.  And then one of them started saying "If Kerry got elected he would be the first senator elected in 40 years, only the second Catholic elected ever."   ...

However we've heard a lot of promises from networks about this kind of stuff.  The New York Times has an article on the subject.

One network news executive, who agreed to speak only on condition of anonymity, put it more starkly: "We're all petrified about getting it wrong."...
