Merrill Bainbridge is a wonderful singer from whom, sadly, the world has heard too little in my opinion.  There are few singers whose lyrics inspire me apart from of course, Sting, the consumate lyricist.  Sometimes a song will inspire me so much, that I'll write new lyrics for it, or poetry which tries to capture the vibe I get from the song.  Tonight I have written new lyrics for Ms. Bainbridge's song "Garden in My Room" from her first album...

Merrill Bainbridge is just terrific and I so wish that she would release a new album.  Sadly her second album "Between the Days" which so far I've not been able to find locally, released in 1998, was also her last.

Her first album "The Garden" included one track "Mouth" that I remember being given airtime.  It was a somewhat nonsensical but happy piece, and though reasonably popular, didn't show the breadth that the rest of the songs on the album showed.  The title track of the album "Garden in My Room" was an undeniably randy piece where the speaker entreats someone to become a lover by promising delights so rich and pure that the lover-to-be will be willingly entrapped within "the garden".

Here are the Garden in My Room lyrics.  Don't read this if randy lyrics will offend you:

There's a garden in my room
Would you like to take a look
There are fascinating things you'll find there

If you dare to come inside
There is nothing I will hide
Come where there is sweet perfume
In the garden in my room

There's a garden in my room
It has apples sweet and ripe
If you'd like to have a taste I'll let you

Cherries red as they could be
Such amazing things you'll see
Everything is in full bloom
In the garden in my room

It's not far I can take you there, where the air is cool and dry
Lay your head on my flower bed and I promise you
Will never ever want to say goodbye

It's not far I can take you there, where the air is cool and dry
Lay your head on my flower bed and I promise you
Will never ever want to say goodbye

There's a garden in my room
Would you like to take a look
Rest your body on my velvet roses

Once you've tasted my delights
Many days will turn to nights
There is nothing you won't do
For the garden in my room

It's not far...

It's not far...

I love the idea and while listening to it tonight and daydreaming about my lovely wife, I suddenly found myself wanting to write something of a response to the song.  A sort of role reversal where the entrapped lover becomes the speaker, and by being so completely and unconditionally willing a captive, entraps his captor.

The response came out a little darker than the original song, but somehow that seems appropriate.  In the end the speaker admits that he expects being a captive will eventually make him also a captor... a paradox of unconditional love.

Here then are a new set of lyrics which can be sung to the music of "Garden in My Room".  Be warned, "Captive of Your Heart" is every bit as kinky as the original song if not moreso, so if you are offended by that sort of thing, don't read it.  Further, as these are lyrics, they don't read as well as they sing and it helps if you know the song.  The link to the album above will bring to you a page which includes a brief audio sample of the original song.

Captive of Your Heart lyrics:

I'm a captive of your heart,
Freedom's not what I desire,
I prefer these bindings of my choosing...

Let me lay here by your side
Awash in your fragrant tide
Let me end up as I start
As a captive of your heart.

I'm a captive of your heart
But I do not miss the day
Won't you come and share with me your wishes?

As you lay there dressed in black,
Let my fingers trace  your back.
Let me ply my subtle art
As the captive of your heart...

Ask, my love, just a whispered breath, and you will need not ask twice
I'll give free, what you need of me, and I'll carry you
As close as I can get to paradise.

I'll hold you to myself alone, no conditions, rules, or deals
Let me be, what you need of me, for there is so much
So very much I want to make you feel...

I'm a captive of your heart,
But it is a welcome trap
Let me ever remain in its chambers...

For my love will capture you
Paradoxical but true--
You will one day play the part
Of the captive of my heart.

Ask, my love...

Ask, my love...
